HANNOVER, Germany — BAIC FOTON has outlined an expanded strategy for the European market, combining international growth, new-energy vehicles, intelligent technologies and deeper local operations as the commercial vehicle manufacturer seeks to strengthen its position globally.
Speaking during the Media Day press conference at IAA TRANSPORTATION 2026, BAIC FOTON Executive Vice President Liu Xuguang presented the company’s European roadmap, emphasizing localized products and services alongside the development of cleaner and smarter commercial transportation solutions.
Expanding a Global Commercial Vehicle Business
Founded in 1996, BAIC FOTON now employs more than 30,000 people and operates 23 smart manufacturing plants in China, together with 32 production facilities overseas.
The company says it has ranked first in commercial vehicle sales in China for 21 consecutive years and has led China’s commercial vehicle exports for 15 consecutive years.
Its international strategy is built around what it calls the “Three Comprehensives”—internationalization, new-energy transformation and intelligent development.
For overseas markets, the company plans to combine locally adapted products with integrated transportation and energy solutions, while working with local partners to strengthen its operations in individual markets.
BAIC FOTON’s product portfolio spans heavy- and light-duty trucks, vans, pickups, buses and special-purpose vehicles. Its powertrain offerings include conventional fuel systems as well as battery-electric, hybrid and hydrogen technologies.
Within the group’s broader portfolio, FOTON focuses on premium commercial vehicles, while FORLAND targets high-volume light and mini commercial vehicles. CAVAN, meanwhile, is developing mobility solutions centered on green energy technologies.
New-Energy Technologies for European Transport
Europe represents an important market for BAIC FOTON’s new-energy strategy.
The company plans to prioritize battery-electric, hybrid and hydrogen-powered technologies across both passenger and freight transportation applications.
Among the technologies being introduced is CAVAN’s electric van, which is built on a dedicated battery-electric platform designed specifically for efficient urban distribution. The architecture is intended to improve space utilization while reducing energy consumption.
BAIC FOTON says its dedicated new-energy platforms allow vehicle specifications to be adapted to different routes, payload requirements and operating cycles.
For European fleet operators, this approach is intended to provide solutions across a range of applications, from urban delivery and regional distribution to long-distance transportation and passenger services.
The company also sees these technologies as supporting the transition toward lower-carbon fleet operations while improving overall fleet efficiency.
Building a Long-Term European Presence
BAIC FOTON currently has a presence in nearly 20 European markets, supported by more than 300 service outlets.
The company plans to expand further across key European markets and establish local assembly operations by 2028.
A dedicated European technical center is already supporting market research, product planning and technical services. The facility is also expected to play a role in ensuring BAIC FOTON vehicles meet European Union regulations and respond to the requirements of local customers.
The company’s strategy goes beyond vehicle manufacturing.
BAIC FOTON is developing an integrated energy and mobility ecosystem covering solar power, energy storage, charging infrastructure, vehicle-to-grid services and load testing.
As part of that effort, the company plans to deploy at least 5,000 charging terminals across Europe and develop partnerships covering vehicle leasing, fleet management and used commercial vehicles.
From Vehicle Sales to an Integrated Mobility Ecosystem
BAIC FOTON’s European strategy reflects a broader shift in the commercial vehicle industry, where manufacturers are increasingly looking beyond the vehicle itself toward charging, energy management, fleet services and lifecycle support.
By combining new-energy powertrains with localized production, technical support and partnerships, BAIC FOTON aims to establish a more comprehensive presence in Europe.
The company says the strategy will allow it to respond more closely to local transportation requirements while supporting European customers as they transition toward cleaner and increasingly intelligent commercial mobility.
